  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup or honey
  • 1/4 cup melted coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips (dairy-free if preferred)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line an 8×8 inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, mash the ripe bananas. Stir in the applesauce, maple syrup, melted coconut oil, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Fold in the chocolate chips.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly.
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs.
  8. Let the brownies cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares.
