Hunan Beef is a spicy and savory stir-fry dish featuring tender slices of beef and crisp vegetables in a rich, flavorful sauce. It is a classic Chinese-American entree known for its bold taste and aromatic spices.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 inch fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon chili garlic sauce (or to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Cooked rice, for serving

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine the thinly sliced beef with cornstarch, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, and sesame oil. Mix well and let marinate for at least 15 minutes.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the marinated beef in a single layer and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, until browned. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil to the skillet. Add the red bell pepper, green bell pepper, and onion. Stir-fry for 3-5 minutes, until vegetables are tender-crisp.
  4. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger to the skillet. Stir-fry for 1 minute until fragrant.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together the beef broth, oyster sauce, chili garlic sauce, and sugar.
  6. Pour the sauce mixture into the skillet with the vegetables. Bring to a simmer and cook for 1-2 minutes, until the sauce thickens slightly.
  7. Return the cooked beef to the skillet. Toss everything together to coat the beef and vegetables with the sauce. Cook for another 1-2 minutes, until heated through.
  8. Serve immediately over cooked rice.

Notes

  • Adjust the amount of chili garlic sauce to your preferred spice level.
  • For extra heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes with the garlic and ginger.
  • You can substitute other vegetables like broccoli, carrots, or snow peas.
  • Ensure your wok or skillet is hot before adding the beef for a good sear.
