Ingredients
Scale
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
1/2 cup milk
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup chocolate chips
Instructions
Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
In a separate small bowl, whisk together milk, egg, and vanilla extract.
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
Fold in the chocolate chips.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat it into an 8-inch circle, about 1 inch thick.
Cut the circle into 8 wedges.
Place the wedges on the prepared baking sheet.
Bake for 15-18 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
Let cool on a wire rack before serving.
Notes
For a richer flavor, use heavy cream instead of milk.
Do not overmix the dough, as this can lead to tough scones.
Scones are best served warm on the day they are baked.
Store leftover scones in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
